Famous singer from China, Zhu Ming Ying, visits Steven Dunning at the Pasadena Chinese School. Mr. Dunning and Ms. Zhu have been good friends for years now. Her son, Jay Wang, also came from China recently to co-star in the film NOW CHINATOWN. Steven said, "I was very happy that Jay could come to Los Angeles and be in the film. He did a great job and I hope he can be in my next film too." Jay is currently working on his music career and other acting projects in China.
Zhu Ming Ying was here with Steven to announce the opening of the International Modern Arts and Culture University in Beijing. Mr. Dunning is the co-chair of the new school and is heading up the film, television, and multi-media program. He took Ms. Zhu to several southern California universities to begin talks of exchange programs between America and China. First visit was to the University of Southern California where they toured the brand new Zemeckis center. It's a multi-million dollar state of the art facility used for teaching the most advanced film, television and multi-media programs. This is the type of facility that students at the International Modern Arts and Culture University will have as well. Next stop was California State University at Northridge. They are known for their large Asian studies program and an excellent business administration school. With a strong faculty devoted to the China Institute at CSUN, it is a natural fit for the new university in Beijing. This new school is being headed by Zhu Ming Ying and has been a life long dream of hers. The LA Times called her the "Madonna of China" during her hugely popular singing career. Her worldwide travel experience for performances and business have provided a diverse background of friends and professionals that will join the school as teachers and students. Her desire is to educate Chinese students with the best technology possible, Chinese students who may not be able to afford to study abroad. Also the school will give exchange students from America and other countries the chance to experience the Chinese culture in mainland China today. The school will teach dance, music, theater arts, visual arts, language, business administration, film and television, computers and multimedia. Two and four year university degrees, and grades K-12 will be offered. Classes will be taught in both English and Chinese. American and other foreign professors will come to the school as instructors much like the exchange students as new pupils. Ms. Zhu graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston and her strong relationship there will prove invaluable for her new school. The construction of the Phase One twelve million dollar facility began in September 2000 and school started the following year. It is located in the Chaoyang district next to Foreign Embassy Row and Beijing's largest city park complete with lakes and golf courses. It is a safe and popular area of Beijing that houses ninety percent of foreign embassies and sixty percent of the largest and nicest hotels attracting China's growing commerce and tourism. And only twenty minutes from the airport.
