|Transcript from KSCI CHANNEL 18 - INTERVIEW
Now Chinatown, a Hollywood film, is into post production now. The film's director and actors accepted our station interview.
V. O: Chinatown is infamous as a Chinese congregation point. Many years ago, many immigrants chose Chinatown as the starting point of their new life. As we step into Chinatown today, the familiar streets and shop signs made one feels disoriented. Hollywood, latest project, Now Chinatown, happens right at the heart of Chinatown, with Chinese immigrants as its subject.
Hu: The story of this film spans over a period of 6 days. Only 6 days...but the Chinese girl has stayed in Chinatown for 3 years. In other words, we're using the 6 days as a showcase to demonstrate her experiences over the 3 years, and her emotion changes. For me, as an actress, it's a very challenging project.
Although I came from Mainland China, my background is totally different from the Chinese girl in the film. I didn't come for a better life. I came in search for a different life style, to find out about the American society. Of course, my family was with me, which was a great advantage. I didn't have to go through so much hardships. But the girl is completely different. Her life is totally isolated. For 3 years, she simply stays in Chinatown, without stepping out at all. This life experience is a great difference from mine.

V.O: America, as an immigrant country, provides boundless immigrant subjects . Why a film with Chinatown as the backdrop? The director and co-star of Now Chinatown, Steven Dunning, explains that it is a natural progression for him as he had spent 7 years travelling around the world, including Mainland China and other Asian countries. He's captivated by the Asian cultures and is very interested in Chinese martial arts. His surrounding Chinese friends also contributed to his knowledge of Chinese culture. Steven Dunning further adds that, after he left his rural hometown in Pennyslavia for Hollywood, he experienced the struggles and difficulties of the lower class of the society.

In a traditional Hollywood movie, the scenario always involves a white man rescueing the less fortunate people. Now Chinatown is an exception. In the film, a white man encourages the Chinese girl to be brave, to see the outside world. He's not the hero, she is for having the courage to face unknowns." The female lead, Lianne Hu, reiterates that Now Chinatown has its differences from the too often made stereotypes. She said, " The white man and the Chinese girl have many misunderstandings. They started off as friends, not romantically involved, very platonic relationship. However, towards the end, due to the misunderstandings, their friendship suffers. The girl goes through numerous struggles and emotional turmoils. At last, she stands up and declares, " Why should I be afraid? Why don't I accept new challenges? Maybe I'll have a better result."
Now Chinatown is comprised of a mainly Asian cast. All of them express gratitude to the director, Steven Dunning, for providing them a stage to perform. Actor, Jack Huang said, " The director initially has a white man as the fight choreographer. But Chinese fight differently from the Whites. When we fight, we go all over one another, no holding back. That's due to the difference in culture. Also, in many of the set-ups, such as the restaurant layout, the Chinese and Whites look at it differently. So I'm happy that the director kept an open mind. He's very cooperative and tries to recreate everything as realistically as possible."
Actor, Benjamin Liu, adds that, being a 3rd generation Chinese, the film's Chinese culture influence has an impact on his own life. Although he could not speak Mandarin, his identity iremains Chinese.
Now Chinatown is expected to be released end of this year or early next year. Director Steven Dunning reveals that his next movie may be shot with Cow Yun-Fat in China, as Steven is intrigued with the Chinese culture.
|Translation of News report on NATV:
Narration: "Now Chinatown" is a story about an immigrant, whose accidental meeting with a white young man creates within her an interest and need for the world outside Chinatown.
Steven emphasis that this is not a traditional love story. The character he plays is not the typical "Prince on the White Horse" who rescues the girl from Chinese ways. Steven wants to use this film to communicate the theme that no matter what race you are, as long as you have the courage to try out new things, then life will have unlimited possibilities. The film tries to urge the audience to break bounds and explore new things in life. Lianne Hu, who plays the main character is not unfamiliar to the audience. She is the sister of the famous Chinese director Xuyan Hu. She came to America from Shang Hai when she was in Junior High. When she was asked about her character's struggles:
Lianne: The film for this character is a process of internal struggles, a process of self discovery, a process of telling oneself to look for a new life. She must go through all of these internal conflicts till she can say to herself 'I am ready. I want to go and face the outside world. I want to go see the world outside Chinatown. Maybe there will be even more hardship, but with courage I will at least give it a try. See the opportunities that are out there, and life will be very different.'
The story of our film spans over a time period of six days. But the main character has been in Chinatown for three years. We use these six days as a window to express what has been accumulated for her in the past three years. This window also shows the process of her internal change, which to me, as an actress is a great challenge.
Narration: "Now Chinatown" is now in the post-production stage. It will be entering the Golden Horse award in Taiwan, and distributed in the Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China film market.
Anchor: Several companies have expressed interest but Mr. Dunning is giving the domestic market the first bid on it. From our responses he will have no problem finding an audience.
